Artsy Fartsy

I'm a BIG fan of white frames with white matting. I especially love the look when hung on a richly colored wall. But I was recently faced with a bit of a challenge. I have a blank wall over my couch in the living room of my apartment, but because I'm only renting and actually moving out in a couple months, it didn't make sense to paint in order to achieve the look I like.

I decided to take a look at my Etsy favorites to spark some ideas. I like the idea of purchasing art from sites like Etsy, rather than at TJMax, Target, etc. Obviously, I was looking for something blue and something seaside themed (I'm predictable if nothing else).

That's when I came across a favorited piece of art from the New England artist, Besty McLellen. Her Etsy shop is called betsymclellenstudio. I love her whimsy designs and bold use of color.

You can purchase prints of her original art pieces, which fit the small budget I set aside for this project. Due to my temporary living space, I didn't want to purchase something too large or something that couldn't be used in another room down the road.

I decided to purchase a set of three prints (8x10) to be hung in sequence over the couch. I chose three paintings similar in color scheme and perspective. They whisk me away to the feeling of being near the water in the summertime; and the use of all those shades of blue create a calm in my soul. The fact that these pieces are inspired by actual landscapes in Maine is the cherry on top of my sundae.

As soon as the prints arrived in the mail (within a week), I placed them in three of my favorite, go-to, white frames. I purchased the frames at the Christmas Tree Shop for around $7 each.

I'm terrible at hanging multiple frames in-line with one another. Plus, I'm usually too impatient to wait for a loved one to get home to help me. But my favorite trick is using poster putty around the corners flush to the wall. You know, the stuff we all hung our Teen Bop and N'Sync posters with as teenagers. It keeps the frame from shifting every time a door closes and also protects the wall from damage.

Here is the final result! I have to say that I'm pretty enamored with the color scheme. I would prefer that the prints be larger (and the wall not so white), but I can always purchase larger ones down the road. Alright, I'm off to snuggle up on the couch and daydream of warm, summer days.
